Antarctica is the 5th largest continent, covering an area of around 5.4 million sq mi (14.0 million km²). It has no permanent population, due to its harsh climate, though there is a temporary population of anywhere between 1,000 and 5,000 research scientist resident throughout the year. While there have been some territorial claims to parts of Antarctica over the years, there are presently no countries or governments.
